Shooting Range | Skill Building
Some paintball fields have their own shooting range, where players can safely test out their markers, test the speed of their projectiles, and practice shooting. At the shooting range, placers can test the muzzle velocity of their markers. They may use a hand held chronograph, to check the speed of their paintball gun. Most fields have muzzle velocity limits, between 250-300 feet per second. The Hand-Held Chronograph from PMI is very small, and can accurately measure speeds from 150 to 450 fps. Radar Chron also make chronographs that can measure the speed paintballs at the shooting range. In the shooting range, players usually pick a target or number of targets, and then shoot at them. Players try to hit targets at multiple distances so that they can get an idea of how far away they can hit a target from. The concept of not shooting long is one of the first paintball tactics in the game to learn. When some one says "don't shoot long, you are telling a player not to waste his time shooting at targets that are out of his range.

Shooting long is also referred to as longballing. When players waste their energies shooting at targets that are out of their range, they do two negative things. First, they are wasting a lot of paintballs. Instead of conserving your ammunition now, you are using up the ball in your hopper, and you may later need to take the time to reload at the most inopportune time. Second, to shoot at an opponent in a game, you will need to put yourself at risk to come out of that bunker to take that shot. Why take the risk if you have no chance of hitting anyone. Take the opportunity to practice shooting at targets in the shooting range to get an idea of how far you can hit from.
Some companies make inflatable shooting ranges where players can compete against one another in player duels. One such manufacturer is Paintless Paintball Shooting Range. The shooting range can be inflated in a matter of minutes, and is ideal for paintball birthday parties and paintball special events. These portable shooting ranges are not built for conventional paintball guns, but the ammo used in these games are reusable foam paintballs. The format of games in this inflatable arena is a shooting contest between two players, not at each other, but at targets at the end of the arena. The two shooters fire on these targets, and score points for hitting the light targets.
Many paintball fields do have an outdoor shooting range. Motor World Virginia Beach has a range where players can sharpen their shooting skills, and build their confidence for the next game. Motor World has a paintball shooting range, as well as venues for parties, Go-Karts, mini-golf, climbing walls, and a Kiddie City for the children. The paintball complex of MotorWorld is called splat Zone, and includes two fields, as well as a ProShop for renting equipment. The first field, Course A, was planned with a combination of industrial spools and inflatable bunkers.
