Situational Awareness - Skillbuilding
The United naval Aviation Command School defines "situational awareness" as the degree of accuracy by which one's perception of his current environment mirrors reality. In other words, can a leader scan the environment and understand what is going on around. A paintball player with a keen situational awareness can quickly scan the environment, the formation of his opponents, and the formation of his own men and come up with quick strategies of how to move his men. A paintball general or paintball leader can scan the enemy environment in front of him, and recognize a defensive formation in front of him or whether they are gearing up for an offensive.

A paintball leader must recognize the movements of the enemy and recognize defensive or offensive strategy. If its strategy of the opponent is defensive, then they may be setting up you and your men for an ambush. If you recognize a defensive formation but forge ahead anyway to launch an attack, pull your team ahead and make sure that each attacker is protected by a backup. A paintball leader must have a situational awareness and be aware of what is happening around him. A leader must be able to help his team together and make sure that none of his men are set up to walk into an ambush situation alone. A leader with good situational awareness will keep his men in a formation such that they will not fall into any enemy trap.
If the strategy of the opposition is offensive, a team leader possessing situational awareness will be able recognize the development and have his players ready accordingly. A leader recognizing the development of an enemy attack will have his snipers and shooters ready for when the enemy comes out of hiding to make their move. A leader who possess situational awareness will have his defense back to protect the flag. A player with situational awareness must quickly and accurately assess the situation and react accordingly.
Some men in history who have possessed a keen situational awareness include some o the Great generals of history. These generals have demonstrated an amazing ability to coordinate the movements of hundreds of u nits, many thousand of men, and in many different countries simultaneously. The men they were leading were able to take on the qualities of their leaders, qualities like resolve, courage determination, brilliance. Some of these leaders have included Alexander, Napoleon, Eisenhower, Rommel, Patton, Montgomery, and Mac Arthur. The armies of these leaders were able to fuse patriotism for their country, selflessness for the group cause, fearlessness, and a good military strategy to get the job done. The men, under the leadership of their general, were able to work together towards national victories.
A paintball general has the situational awareness to make quick decisions on the paintball fields. A good decision maker can react quickly, can create new strategies on the fly and has the resolve to put his strategies into action. Through his keen situational awareness, the team leader can make choices quickly and give clear decisive instructions to his players.
