Dead Box - Paintball
The dead box is where a player must go after he has been eliminated from the game. In the NPPL, there are two dead boxes next to the playing field that will be surrounded by safe netting. Before going to the dead box, a player must put their barrel plug over their marker, and go to the nearest dead box. The referee may instruct the player to go to a box other than the closest one if the path of the closest one would cause too much interference in the game. Players must remain in the dead box until the conclusion of the game. Players that are hit, must take all the equipment they brought onto the field to the dead box as they exit the field. A player leaving the dead box and interfering in the current match may result in a three game suspension for himself and his team.
After a player is eliminated, he must take the most direct line towards the dead box, and not engage in any behavior that would interfere with the game. One example of a devious action that could affect the outcome of the game would be to act as a human shield. In acting as a human shield, you are walking in a path directly in front of your teammate that will make it impossible for the opposition to tag him or her. There are some examples of a player inadvertently getting in the way of sniper fire, but in general if it looks like a rat, and smells like a rate, it's a rat.
There are some instances where a player that has been tagged has been known to deliberately get into a shooter's line of fire, in order to get bonus balled. Because he knows that he is going to be called out anyway, he gets in the way of his opponent to cause enough interference that the opponents gets aggravated and starts Teeing Off. By the time the ref comes around for a paintcheck, he sees the cunning player getting bonus balled. The deceitful player cries that he is getting bonus balled, and the wrong guy may be penalized.
Illegal re-entry and interference in the game is one of a number of events that may result in a suspension from league games. Here are a list of other game infractions that could result in a 3 to 6 game suspension.
- Shooting from the dead box. Shooting from the dead box is strictly prohibited. A player must plug his barrel plug in as soon as he or she has been marked and always leave it in the rest of the game.
- In almost all cases, physical contact with another player is prohibited. Physical contact during or after a play that results in injury (eg. slap, punch, or kick) will automatically result in a six game suspension.
- Outbursts, or any acts of vocal or physical aggression will result in a player suspension. Outbursts may include throwing your paintball gear into an area that could cause harm or injury, or slamming your equipment against a bunker or dead box.
- The velocity of your paintgun is always a serious issue. Shooting at velocities higher than 325 feet per second is painful and potentially dangerous.
- All physical contact is outlawed, even a simple push, nudge, or shoulder bump.
