ASTMF2184 Paintball Barrier Netting
ASTM F2184 is a section of ASTM that discusses the various standards for Paintball Barrier Netting. Paintball Barrier Netting serves the dual purpose of marketing voluntary lines on the field as well as stopping paintballs from traveling away from the field. This type of barrier netting is essential in some sections of fields so that people walking near the fields do not get hurt. This netting is especially important in games where paintballs are traveling as fast as 300 feet per second. Some paint guns capable of shooting paint this fast include the Redz Ion, the REX Paintball R3, and the Shocktech SFL Pulse.
Some audience spectators might feel safe watching games from the sidelines, but without goggles or a barrier netting in place they could get hurt. With an ASTM approved system in place, spectators will have the ability to watch the games safely and securely. A secure and adding system should surround the entire field, or it should be in front of any area where players are spectators to not have their goggles on. The netting system should be big enough so that projectiles as small as 0.68 caliber cannot get through the netting. The net should also be strong enough so that it will still hold together even after repeated strikes from paintball projectiles. WPN Elixer Paintballs, Worr Games Products Worr Domination Paintballs, and XBall Paintball Chronic Paintballs are some of the types of projectiles that will be hitting these types of netting structures. When creating the ASTM2184 section o the ASTM, several members of the paintball community assembled to standardize the materials used to manufacture paintball barrier netting, how to set the systems up, and how to maintain the systems. The members of this community included paintball manufacturers, insurance companies, paintball gun manufacturers, and field's owners and operators. Michael Ratco, a leading developer of products from Procaps Inc. contributed to this process and worked directly with the ASTM with many of his findings. The purpose of the ASTM F2184 meeting was to discuss current problems on paintball fields around the United States as a result of fields with no netting systems in place when there should be and fields with shoddy netting systems. The committee discussed ways to standardize the process, and testing procedures that would adequately measure the quality of netting systems that are out there. Netting systems that are inadequate or not properly maintained could be worse than places that have no barrier netting at all. At least with enough places that have no netting, players are able to keep their masks/goggles on until they get back into their car. The ASTM group also concluded that netting barriers should be put up any place where there are spectators who come to watch games.
There are a number of strong manufacturers of Paintball Barrier Netting, including Alpha Paintball Netting and Redden Nets. Redden Nets can be built as high as 30 feet, making sure that all projectiles stay on the playing field and do not disturb anything on the outside.
