ASTM Subcommittee F08.24 | Paintball
The ASTM Subcommittee F08.24 has published a number of standards about various paintball guns and gear. While some people consider any sport that involves firing projectiles and dangerous sport, paintball is in fact one of the safest sports in the United States. One of the reasons that the sport is so safe is because of the dedicated manufacturers of paintball gear towards making good quality products. Worr Games Products, WPN, and Bob Long are some of the game's best manufacturers who love style and speed in their designs, but always put safety first. While the manufacturers always police themselves, there is always the ASTM to help out, offer suggestions, and set official safety standards. The ASTM sets safety standards on paintball related products like masks, goggle accessories, paintball sights, paintball grips, low-end mechanical markers, and high-end mechanical markers. The safety standards set by ASTM are important and essential, to maintain the integrity of the sport, and to maintain the health of the player. The ASTM publishes numerous articles with reference to paintball barrier netting, paintball field turf, and reusable paintballs. Some good quality reusable paintballs on the market include T2 Reusable Paintballs from Rufus Dawg, UBalls Target Systems for Generation E, and Reballs by Reball.

The official website for the ASTM is located at www.astm.com. ASTM is an acronym for the American Society for Testing and Materials. The ASTM Committee F08 publishes rules and regulations for sports equipment and facilities. These publications include standards for facilities and sporting equipment and sports like track and field, the javelin, snowboarding, mountain biking, and track cycling. It is the subcommittee F08.24 that publishes articles specifically for paintball.
One of these publications includes F1777-02 which promotes data about the practices for Paintball Field Operation. In this article the safety requirements are outlined as to the operation of the fields, the responsibilities of the referees, and the mandatory use of certain safety equipment. For instance, all players and paintball games are required to wear high protection devices, whether it be just a Volvo system or a full head protection system. Some of the best goggles systems include the Switch Mask from Proto, the HotShot Thermal Mask from Scott USA, and the Profiler Mask from VForce. The Profiler Mask from UForce comes with a number of color highlites such as red, blue, green, orange, yellow, green and black. All UForce masks meet or exceed ASTM standards for eye safety.
Active Standard F2041-00 sets a number of new standards for marker safety and marker warnings. In this F2041-00 publication, recommendations are made about marker operations and marker velocities. The ANS GX-5, Airguns Designs ULE Custom, and G-Force Technologies G8 Super Marker are all productive paintball guns. F2771-03 sets space on marker barrel blocking devices. There are over 25 effective barrel blocking devices on the market, including the Barrel Plug from Viewloader.
