What is the ASTM and how does it apply to paintball? The ASTM stands for the American Society for Testing & Materials. The ASTM was founded by a group of scientists in 1898 to address dangerous engineering projects that could compromise the safety of American Consumers. The ASTM is a watchdog group that evaluates products on the American market. The scientists and engineers on the ASTM test our roads, bridges, and paintball products to make sure that they are safe to use and make our society a safer place to live. The man not responsible for the founding of the ASTM was Charles Benjamin Dudley, who wanted to create an organized body that would evaluate the products we used in a non-biased way.

The American Society for Testing & Materials began their career by testing the products that composed the railroads and bridges that Americans traveled on at the end of the 18th century. The ASTM, as a result of evaluations of the metals used, outlined a list of standards for the steel used to fabricate railroad tracks. Since 1898, the ASTM has grown to list more than 10,000 standards for the products that go are sold on the US market, and the materials that go into them. The ASTM is now a global body with a worldwide presence, and an online site, www.astm.org. The ASTM offers valuable content on their website and a physical catalog to educate the American consumers of safety standards for the products that we use every day. The American Society for testing and materials publishes standards and guidelines for the consumer goods that we use to ensure that they are safe and reliable.
The ASTM publishes articles on their online site www.astm.org related to the sport of paintball. The ASTM publishes evaluations and recommendations on the paintball guns, paintballs and equipment that are used on rec and tournament fields. The ASTM paintball standards evaluates products like paintball markers, barrier netting, inflatable bunkers, hoppers, loaders, barrels, and expansion chambers. The ASTM publish online articles that includes recommendations and reviews or products like paintball barrier netting. Committee F08, a subcommittee of ASTM lists a set of guidelines for setting up paintball barrier netting so that spectators to the game can watch the game safely and without incident.
AS a result of comprehensive research by the ASTM, the society drafted Standard Guide F2184-02 regarding the proper procedures for the installation of paintball barrier netting. The F2184-02 standard is published in ANSI volume 15.07. ASTM International Standards Worldwide has a specific committee that focuses on the reliability and safety of paintball guns and gear. Regarding Paintball Barrier Netting, the subcommittee establishes benchmarks for SI units, or inch pound units, target ranges, chronograph areas, and how far players may get from the area before they can safely walk around with their goggles off.
The ASTM publishes an electronic set of standards regarding refillable CO2 cylinders, paintball marker warnings, field operating procedures, and information on other types of fields such as foamball fields. All standards published by the ASTM are designed for the safety of players & spectators.
