Dead Box - Paintball Game Rules
The Dead Box is where a player must go after he has been eliminated from the paintball game. The section of the field refereed to the dead box is also known as player purgatory. To add insult to injury, players in the dead box are also instructed to sit facing away from the game action. In most rec play, a player that has been eliminated is unable to ever return to game action. But in The Big Game or very large scenario games, eliminated players are able to come back in the game after the buzzer sounds every hour or ½ hour. There are other recreational paintball games where players may return to the game after being shot into the dead box. In the paintball game paintburner, multiple 3 man teams continue to rotate into the game with the 3 man teams entering from the dead box. The dead box in this game is also called the designated holding area. In this game multiple three man teams begin the game, shooting at all the other players on the opposing teams. Players that are eliminated are sent to the dead box. The player waiting in the dead box must wait until there are two other players in the holding area, a new three man team is made, and escorted into the game by the referee. Paintball games like these are popular on US fields like Urban Myth Paintball in Port Orchard Washington and the Proving Grounds in Sheridan, Indiana.

The Proving Grounds paintball Field is a multi-dimensional complex, with regular weekly games, as well as events & tournaments that are played throughout the year. Proving Grounds Paintball also sponsors several paintball teams, including Darkside, Undertow, and PG Factory. Several Proving Grounds players have competed in the NPPL Super 7 World Series. Proving Grounds offer players a variety of field options that allow players several different game formats. Proving Grounds has 2 Hyper Ball fields that are composed of large black pip bunkers. The hyperball bunkers are huge and give players a lot of room to maneuver even when they are laying flat on the ground. The hyper ball pipes are hollow, and are big enough to run through when they are laid flat. Players who are eliminated in these hyperball games are instructed to head towards the dead box and stay there until the end of the game.
There are some paintball games where eliminated players do not have to go to the dead box one shot. In the game trophy hunter, shot players are back in the game at the next 5 minute signal and do not have to head back to the dead box. Games like trophy hunters are sometimes popular on field like T Triggertype Paintball Field in Columbia, South Carolina, and Red Cliffs Paintball Park in St. George Utah. In the game trophy hunter, the objective of the game is for each player to gather as many trophies as he can. When one player tags the other, the tagged player kneels down, and must remain motionless until he hears the next five minute signal. Once the downed player hears the 5 minute signal, then he is back in the game. The player who hits the downed player collects an armband trophy from him.
