Rec Ball | Rec-ball | Paintball
Rec-ball paintball and recreational paintball are two terms that are used interchangeably. Rec-ball basically refers to all paintball games that are not scenario games, or professional tournament games. Another way to define Rec-Ball are any games where players do not compete for cash prizes or prizes that include paintball markers or other gear. Most players play rec-ball their whole lives, and never compete in a professional tournament. Most paintball fields have regular Rec Ball games on weekends, and private games that can be reserved for game like fundraisers paintball and church groups paintball. Some fields that support Rec-ball games include Montgomery Sporting Goods & Paintball in Montgomery New York, and Paintball Depot in Hackettstown Jew Jersey. Most Rec-ball games played on local fields are various versions of capture the flag, or games of total elimination. The type of fields for these games are extremely diverse, as opposed to tournament speedball fields which are all relatively compact, with flats surfaces, and inflatable bunkers to hide behind to avoid eliminations. Rec fields range from as simple as a refereed game in naturally wooded settings with white taped boundary lines, to fields with forts that include drawbridges, moats, 20 foot walls, and lookout towers to shoot from.

The two most commonly played Rec Ball games are capture the flag, and total elimination, and total elimination. In the capture the flag format, two teams of equal sides begin the game at opposite ends of the field. Next to each team's starting point is a flag station with a flag for protecting. The objective of most capture the flag games is to cross the field, snatch the other team's flag, and then return it to the home base without getting eliminated. The entire team plays the game while performing two responsibilities, one of going after the other team's flag, and one of defending their own flag. To simultaneously execute both tasks, teams have front players, and back players. Front players are the attackers, they move about the most towards the enemy end of the field and try to capture the opposing team's flag. The mid players and back players lay down tons of paint to provide the attackers cover while they make their moves up the field. The back players lay down paint to protect the front players, and are responsible for making sure that the enemy does not accomplish their objective. To gear up for Rec Ball games, players have bought their makers and gear from manufacturers like Tippmann Ordinance www.tippmannordinance.com and Hammerhead www.hammerheadpaintball.com. The other main category of Rec-ball games is total elimination. Total elimination games involve pretty much how it sounds, which is wiping out the entire other team. The game begins much like capture the flag, with teams of equal strength on opposite sides of the field. The game is over when all the members of the other team are eliminated.
While both of these types of games are fun and offer teams around the country millions of hours of entertainment, there are other variations of rec-ball games that are exciting too. In Charge of the Light Brigade teams take their own flag and attempt to take it across the flag and hand it in the other team's flag station. In Blackjack the game is in the usual capture the flag format, but with each player supplied with only 21 paintballs. The name Blackjack is a reference to the betting card game, where a 21 hand is the best possible score a card player can have to win the game.
