Taper Runner - Player Position
The Tape Runner is the attacking player, he is the first player on your team to engage the enemy, and he has the daring job of trying to capture the enemy flag. The tape runner is the most mobile position, as he runs from one end of the field to the other, and back again if he is fortunate enough to capture the enemy flag. Due to his player position, the tape runner flies light, with a more compact gun, a smaller air tank, and less paint. The tape runner flies with such a light load because he does the most running, and he must be the fastest runner on the field. The tape runner takes the most aggressive position on the field, whether he is trying make the fly capture in capture the flag, or whether he is the first to reach the flag station in attack and defend. This aggressive position frequently puts him in the line of fire, and he is often the first player to be eliminated. The tape runner is a critical player position on fields like Hillcrest Paintball in Keenan Wisconsin, and Outer Limits Paintball in Stratford, Ontario.

The position of the tape runner makes him a pretty big target. He is the closest guy to the other teams backman and thus sees a whole lot of paint flying his way. He usually shoots less paintballs than the insert or the back player, so he does not have to carry as much associated gear with him. This player is often called on to bunker someone, or to sacrifice himself in the name of the team. His primary job is to get as far as he can up the field out of the gates, secure a key bunker, and find the key vantage point to shoot down the opposition. A tape runner remembers to be aware of how large a target he is giving the opposition to shoot at, and he tries to make himself as small as he can. When kneeling, or lying down behind the bunker, he makes sure that his behind, legs, or hopper are not exposed. When running, the tape runner makes sure to stay low to the ground, and he keeps his paintball gun close to his body. When running, he also tries to keep his marker in the hand that is furthest from the opposition. For example, if the tape runner is running to the right, he carries a gun in his left hand, giving the enemy a smaller target to shoot at.
The closer the player keeps the gun to his body, the less surface area your opponent will have to shoot down. Remember that a hit to your marker or hopper is as good as hitting your goggles or body. When getting up to go from bunker to bunker, the tape runner is most effective when running at full speed. While the run and shoot is sometimes an effective strategy, it is rarely an effective strategy at eliminating an enemy player. If anything, it will slow you down and make you a much juicier target. A more effective strategy would be for the tape runner to run quickly to the next bunker, secure his position, and from there make some effective shots. The tape runner should have the smallest and lightest guns and tanks, he should run light and swift. He should be able to squeeze into the smallest bunkers, for this reason, he must carry only necessary gear to keep his body as compact as possible.
