Backman | Player Position
The backman stays in roughly the same area from the start of the game, to the end of the game. The Backman is also referred to as the back player, and he remains back to defend the team flag, or to defend the other players further up the field, such as the frontman and the insert. The backman protects the team flag, or lays down pain to keep the opposition from moving and shooting. His role is also to communicate with the front players to update them on the movements and position of the enemy. The backman communicates with the rover and tells him when to take over for the pointman when he has been eliminated. Paintball games that feature the lock player are played on fields like First Strike Paintball in Newbury Florida, and Hogan's Alley Paintball in New Haven Connecticut.

The backman position is important for two reasons. The first reason is protecting the attacking players further up the field. This player is responsible for most of the cover fire for his teammates. This player fires early and often, so he must have a marker and gun barrel designed to shoot fast and hard, and he must carry a lot of paint on him. The other important cover responsibility of the backman is protecting the team flag from a flag capture or protecting the other team from accomplishing the game objectives. If the game were kick the bucket, the backman would play the closest to the team bucket to make sure the other team does not kick the bucket over. The backman is an important position on fields like Central Coast Paintball Park and Santa Margarita California, and Insane Paintball in Ft. Oglethorpe Georgia.
The back man usually Carries the heaviest load, because the shoots the most paintballs, and uses the longest paintball gun barrel. If that player is usually the captain and coach on the field, he communicates to movement from the enemy to his players, and he usually controls his own teams movement on the field. If one is pointman has been eliminated on the right side of the field, the major act one of his inserts to move into that position to fill the vacancy. The back player may move his men to one side of the other to take the line and overwhelm the enemy. The back players almost constantly firing paint from game on two game over. For this reason, the Carries paint and bill for long range accuracy and one That can shoot at a high rate of speed. One popular marker for the back player, if you can afford it, would be the angel from England's WdP.
Because of the number of shots the backman fires, his pack should carry a larger amount of paint. Plan on shooting many rounds of paint, and you should carry a large air supply so that you don't run out of firepower. When creating your team, it helps to have a backman that is experienced, as the position often requires a player to shoot with both hands, and more than one trigger finger. A backman may need to shoot out of his left hand or his right hand, depending on which bunker or which side of the bunker he is shooting from. Also as a back player shoots early and often, his finger and he and may become tired from shooting, and he may want to switch to another finger.
