Fill - Paintballs
Fill is the term for the paintball that goes inside the shell of the paintball. Sometimes, the fill is colored white the gelatin capsule is clear, and sometimes the fill and a shell of the paintball are both colored. The fill and gel capsule are combined into the paintball in a room called the feed room. The fill is made from polyethylene glycol, a liquid that is thickened with wax.

In the feed room, the gel and fill our united to create the final product. First, the gel is spread over a drum to make the band shell. When the gel has been spread and thinned, it is called the gel ribbon. Once the gel ribbon has been fabricated an encapsulation machine creates two shell halves in the shapes of hollow half spheres. The two half spheres are brought close together, and the fill is inspected before the two shells are closed and sealed.
These young paintballs are still soft, and must be cooled the right way so that they retain their sphere shape and will fire true out of the marker. Any defect in the paintball could cause it to fire inaccurately out of the marker. To give the paintball its sphere shape it is rolled and pre-dried over a conveyor belt. Next, the balls are transferred to a drying rack.
The final product is loaded into a computerized counting machine before they are stored and boxed. Industry research that over 2 billion paintballs are produced and sold each year.
Paintballs with paint fill come in a variety of colors and even a variety of designs on the shells, such as two colored shells, and even shells with designs on them, such as flames, lightning bolts, and cat eyes. Paintballs can even be customized to have your company logo displayed.
Paint fill is water based, and composed of a number of additives that are all non-toxic and machine washable. The components of paint fill include food coloring, titanium dioxide, sorbitol, glycerin, gelatin, and polyethylene glycol. All components of the fill mixture have been approved by the FDA www.FDA.gov as safe. Most of these components go into the food we eat every day.
Though the paint fill mixture produces a paintball with a reliable shot and a product that is long lasting, paintballs can freeze at certain temperatures. The freezing point of fill is fairly close to the freezing point of water. If all the paintballs on the market are created by the same manufacturing process, how does the consumer know which products to choose. There are a number of manufacturers to choose from, and the best way is to talk to the leaders and veterans in the field, and then test out the products yourself.
There are a number of quality producers of paintballs, including Nelson. Nelson is the inventor of the paintball. Nelson has a number of products from their line, including the Hotspot, Nel-Splat, Anarchy, and the Precision.
