The Main Body of Your Marker
The entire series of parts that make up your marker system includes your air power, hopper, barrel, paintballs, and the main body of your marker. The main body, or frame of the gun is the handle, trigger, and the chamber, which contains the cocking mechanism and the bolts. Some paintball markers come equipped with air tanks, hopper, and barrel, and some are sold separately.

The chamber or breech is where the ball awaits the rush of air that fires when you pull the trigger. Located close to the chamber is something called the ball detent. The bald detent makes sure there is only one ball in the chamber at a time. The ball detent also holds the paintball in place so that it doesn't roll out of the barrel. When the trigger is pressed, the ball rushes through the chamber and out of the barrel. The barrel is an extension of your marker and the last thing the ball goes through as it leaves the marker. The barrel is long, and designed to give the paintball a straight path towards its intended target. There are several vendors that design paintball barrels. The barrels can screw onto the main body of your marker.
Marker barrels come in a variety of different barrels. Some barrels include brass composition and are popular because they offer a minimal amount of friction on the paintball as it passes through the barrel. Other popular barrels are composed of stainless steel. Stainless steel barrels are a little heavier than brass barrels, but offer precise and accurate shooting. Aluminum barrels are popular for their more lightweight design and ease of handling. Some barrels are solid, while others have holes punched in them in geometrically shaped patterns. The pattern of holes and observed in barrels is called porting.
The biggest difference that separates markers in design and function is the presence of the semi-automatic, or fully-automatic feature. The first version of the marker was the pump gun or the stock gun, and had a design where you had to re-cock the gun before it was able to fire the next shot. With the semi-automatic, one is able to fire a new shot every time he or she pulls the trigger, and does not need to re-cock each time. Most markers used on recreational fields today are semi-automatics, especially since the prices have come down much in the last five years. There are many excellent suppliers of paintball markers, and paintball guns and gear. Among these excellent manufacturers of paintball includes Severe Paintball,02 Sports, Inc., and Smart Parts.
If you want to fire excellent shots out of the main body of your marker, then you are going to need to purchase paintballs. Some national manufacturers of paintballs and other gear include Major Paintball, Magnum USA, Raven USA, Lapco Paintball, and Evil NPS. Most markers sold today are also called blowback semi-automatics and are popular in tournament competitions.
