Your Paintball Marker
Paintball guns, also called paintball markers use compressed air to shoot paintballs out of a gun barrel. While guns range widely in size and price there are some basic elements, as listed below.
All paintball markers use air pressure from an air tank, or a 12 gram cartridge, to fire a paintball. The speed at which your marker fires a paintball varies from 250 to 300 feet per second. There are devices such as chronographs to measure fps. Most tournaments and fields put a 290 fps speed limit on paintballs. Air tanks are usually loaded with N2 or CO2, depending on field conditions and the temperature at game time.

Air tanks come in different sizes. The larger the tank, the longer your can play before you will require a refill. The size of air tanks usually range between 4 to 20 ounces. The 4 main parts to your paintball marker include the feeder, CO2 tank, barrel, Air Line, and Trigger. You can usually buy complete paintball marker systems, and all parts can be bought separately, in your local paintball store, or online.
- Feeder. The feeder is also called a hopper or a loader. The feeder is usually light and plastic and attaches to the top of your paintgun. Paintballs are loaded manually into the feeder at one end. Paintballs drop one at a time from the feeder into the barrel. Low end feeders rely on gravity to drop from the feeder to the barrel. High end feeders have a mechanical loader to speed up the process and allow a place to shoot more paintballs per second.
- CO2 Tanks. The CO2 tank is the power center of the marker. The tank is pressurized at 750 - 1000 psi. Air leaves the tank from a valve to an airline. High pressure air (HPA) is a non CO2 system and requires a regulator. While CO2 tanks. Most CO2 tanks are attached to the back of the paintball marker. These are some external CO2 tanks that can be anchored to the player with a line that runs to the marker, making it a little less bulky.
- Air Line. From the CO2 tank, the pressurized gas travels up the air line and into the chamber.
- Trigger. The trigger is used to activate the hammer. When the trigger activates the hammer, the hammer slides forward, pulling the bolt over the exhaust valve while pushing the exhaust valve forward to the chamber. Air shoots out of the chamber, through the exhaust valve and through the bolt.
- Barrel. When the trigger is pulled, air shoots through the bolt. The air then surges from the bolt through the barrel, forcing the paintball out at 250 to 300 fps.
