Night Vision Goggles
Night Vision Goggles are an important tool that players use for night paintball. Night vision goggles were first used by the American military for special operations that occurred at night. With these night goggles, soldiers had a distinct advantage over the enemy who they could seek but the enemy could not see them. Night Vision Goggles allow their user to see in the dark. Until recently, they were a very expensive tactical tool that was used exclusively by the military. Recently, costs have gone way down on this tactical tool, and they have become affordable enough for paintball players to use. These goggles are popular in Big Games and Scenario Games that can last as long as a week and are even played at night.
How They Function. Night Vision Goggles work one of two ways. The night goggles either take what little light is available in the environment and multiply it thousands of times, or they project their own light and produce on image from the light reflected back. Passive NVG's amplify the light that is already present, and active goggles produce their own infrared light to pick up a visual of the environment.

Passive Night Vision Goggles.
Passive Goggles hugely amplify what little light is already out there. The most common source of passive light at night is the moon. Moonlight projects more than enough light for the operator of Night Vision Goggles operator to see his environment, teammates, and opponents. The passive goggles pick up what little light there is, and amplifies in thousands of times using an image intensifier.
Active Night Vision Goggles.
Passive goggles work pretty well, as there are rarely any places to go where there is no light at all in the environment. There will be times where there is no light at all, and the passive goggles would work very poorly in these circumstances. No light areas could include a moonless night, or when a soldier or paintball player is indoor or underground with no light source. Active goggles create and project their own infrared light. Infrared light is projected from these goggles, and produce an image from the light reflected back. The infrared light that is projected from these goggles cannot be seen by your opponents, so the light projected from these Night Vision Goggles will not give your position away. An image enhancer multiplies the light that is reflected on the objects in your surroundings, and the image reflected back can be seen on a video screen. These night goggles can have screens built into the eye-pieces.
There are a number of high quality night vision goggles on the market, including the ATN Viper Night Vision Goggle. ATN, or American Technologies Network Corporation, are the makers of several Night Vision Systems, including the Night Shadow 3A Night Vision "Binocular, the Night Sentry Night Vision Binocular, and the PS-3-3 Night Vision Goggles. Some companies sell NV Goggles that were made specifically for night paintball, including US Cavalry. These types of goggles are often used in scenario games where players simulate stealth missions carried out by members of the military's Special Forces. Other exotic paintball products include rocket launchers and mortars.
