Woodchuck Love
Woodchuck Love refers to the back and forth between two opposing players, where each player will pop up and out of the bunker, take a quick shot, and then scurry back down and back to safety. The term Woodchuck Love is a reference to woodchucks who will periodically pop their head out of their Woodchuck hole, to take a quick look around, and then scamper back into their hole. Often, players will use the snap shooter maneuver to quickly come out of hiding, take a few shots at the enemy, and then go back into hiding. Snap shooting is the paintball tactic of jumping out of a hiding spot to make a quick survey of the land, shoot a direct hit at the enemy, and then retreat back into hiding. The faster you can make the move before taking a cover point the better player you will become. The longer you keep yourself out of your bunker or cover point, the more time you give your opponent to line you up for an elimination.
When two players tradeoff single shots in a game of Woodchuck Love, games can go on while, as neither player is out in the open long enough to get tagged. For the most part, both players are demonstrating good judgment to minimize the time that they are out in the open. Here are a list of additional paintball tips for staying in the game longer.
- Before you begin playing, make sure that you and your teammates turn off your cell phone, pagers, and any other electronic devices that may go off or start ringing. You may have worked hard in finding just the perfect sniper point only to be betrayed by your blackberry suddenly buzzing and giving your sweet spot away.
- Just before the game starts, you should take out your barrel condom or barrel plug or barrel cozy so that you don't just end up dirtying the barrel at game start.

- If you are in the middle of a contest of Woodchuck love, you should attempt to pop up out of different sections of the same bunker prevent your enemy from lining up a shot for the next time you come out of the same place. If you keep popping up out of the same location, you will become an easy target.
- Unless you are sure you know where all your teammates are, you should never shoot at something rustling in the bunker. Your teammate will be out whether the shot came from you or your opponent.
- If playing recreational paintball, you and your team should have some type of uniform, or color bands that easily distinguish you. That will make it easier to know who you are shooting at, so that you don't off your own teammates.
- Don't get two comfortable with where you are on the field. A moving target is much harder to hit than a stationary one.
