Though there are literally hundreds of different ways to play the game of paintball, and over nearly every type of imaginable terrain, some fundamental principles remain. Paintball is a game of tag that will be a core component of any game, no matter how long it is, or no matter how many players are involved. In the sport of paintball, you tag a player by shooting and hitting him with a paint pellet that breaks, leaving him with a mark of paint on him. When a player is marked by a visible paint splatter, he is either eliminated form the game, out of the game temporarily, or forced to change sides to the other team. When a player is marked, there will always be some type of consequences to him that will change his status in the game. The player that is marked will either have to leave the field for good, go to a designated holding area, or drop down to where he is standing and wait for a teammate to tag him back into the game.
The machine that a player uses in these games to eliminate/tag/mark opponents is a paintball gun. Paintball guns are also referred to as paint guns or paintball markers. These machines use airpower such as Co2 or N2 from air tanks to push paintballs out of the barrel of the gun at their opponents. When these paint pellets hit their intended targets, the shell breaks and the pain fill splatters, leaving a clear mark of paint on them. That is why the gun used in these games is often called a paintball marker, because it shoots projectiles that are designed to mark up an opponent.

These games may have an unlimited number of objectives depending on the type of game being played. In some games, the key objective will be to eliminate all the other players in the game. So in these games, players on a team will try to eliminate all the other players in order to win the game. In games like these, marking the opposing players will be the primary objective in the game. In other games, the objective will be to take certain objects on the field before the other team can, or to take objectives away from the other team. Paintball games with objectives like these are included in classic games like Capture the Flag, Centerflag, Charge of the Light Brigade, and Recon. So in games like these, players still try to mark opposing players, but marking other players is not the primary objective. Bur marking other players in games like Charge of the Light Brigade is still important because it will decrease the number of opponents shooting at you and it will decrease the number of players in your way trying to stop you from completing your objective. Paintball games like these are sometimes played on fields like AAA Paintball Park in Constantina New York, and Del Hobbies Paintball in Pedricktown New Jersey.
Playing the game of paintball like a veteran means knowing how to operate your gear, having a fundamental knowledge of game tactics, and playing like a valuable teammate. Good players will use tactics you want to copy, and bad players will make goofs you don't want to repeat.
