The Battle of Gettysburg
The Battle of Gettysburg was a huge military conflict in the American Civil War. This landmark conflict was fought approximately 40 miles southwest of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and became an important victor for the Union Army. The Battle of Gettysburg is often described as the turning point in the civil War and a defeat for the confederate army. Until this point, the Confederate had the momentum in the war with a string of military veterans including Chancellorsville in May 1863. General Robert E. Lee decided to attack the Union Army in their own land to keep them on their heels. Lee then organized a fighting force of nearly 75,000 soldiers left their base near Fredericksburg to take the fight to the enemy. The Union Army got an early tip on the confederate's movements through a lucky encounter with the confederate near the Rappahannock River. To trace the movements of the Confederate Army, General Hocker instructed Alfred Pleasonton to put together a reconnaissance group of 10,000 soldiers across the Rappahannock River. This reconnaissance paid off as the group came into the confederate army, and the huge conflict was underway. The battle was a stalemate, but now the Union was aware of the Confederates movements. The first battle of The Gettysburg Campaign took place on June 9, 1863.
On June 14th - 15th there was another huge conflict that led to another Union Army defeat despite of Federal regiment that was 9,000 strong. The Federal Army suffered a defeat here, and they were forced to relinquish their war supplies and ammunition to the Confederates.
Bolstered by recent victories, General Robert E. Lee drove north into the Cumberland Valley of Pennsylvania. Lee and Stuart agreed to split up and hit the Union Army from different sides to crush the northern army. Stuarts' army split with Lee but ran into heavy resistance from Union counter offensives. Stuarts' movements were continuously delayed, and he was unable to join Lee until July 2nd.

By June 28th thee were two legions of forces led by Hill and Longstreet camped at Chambersburg. At the same time, a legion of forces led by Ewill moved across the mountains and past Carlisle and York and still advancing towards Harrisburg. On this same day, Lee discovered that the Union Army was camped at Frederick, and that the army's leadership was in transition from General Hooker to General Meade. Lee concluded that this would be a perfect opportunity to flank the Union Army and force surrender. Lee's next move was to bring his entire army east of the mountains and strike. Meades army was also moving north at this time and the two giant forces clashed in full battle at Gettysburg.
During the Battle of Gettysburg, there were a series of fierce fighting at Cemetery Hill, Little Round Top, Devil's Den, and Culp's Hill.
There were nearly 50,000 casualties of war, with colossal damages on both sides. The entire Gettysburg conflict ended with Robert E. Lee ordering a bloody retreat back to Virginia.
The Battle of Gettysburg is often recreated in paintball battles in a sub-division of the game called scenario paintball.
