Goggles & Head Protection
While there are many safety precautions to take note of, the most important precaution involving protecting the eyes and head. Eye injury is the number one cause of injury in the sport of paintball, though many occurrences are off the field in non-regulated places. Any official licensed paintball field has a number of minimum precautions that include goggles and face protection. This part of the body is most vulnerable to injury from a paintball impact.
"Blasterday pointed, yelling "Get off the field! You're hit! Get out! Get out!"
His unfortunate red team opponent was already leaving the field.
"Bonus balls!" yelled Blasterday. Dit dit dit dit, bang bang bang, smack smack smack, thump thump…"
October APG, 2006
This scenario is all to commonly observed on the paintball field and illustrates an example of un-sportsmanlike conduct. It is always a universal rule that once a player has been eliminated from the game, they are no longer to be targets. Once a player calls himself out or is called out by the referee, they are to leave the field and not shot at. Shooting at a player when their guard is down can compromise a players safety and bad blood between players or teams. In many cases, the player shot at returns fire, and the conflict escalates until the players are blasting each other from point blank range or are even fighting.

While paintball boasts an impressive safety records on supervised paintball fields, all players and referees involved in games must watch out for head shootings at close range. Shooting at a player's head from close range can cause significant pain that could result in a concussion, cuts on the neck, or even dislodge the mask enough to expose the face or eyes. Remember the person whose head you shot at may be biding his time until he can reward its favor later.
The conflict done where shooting at the eliminated player escalated into an angry conflict and shooting at close range illustrates two behaviors prohibited in paintball. First, you do not play the game angry, or to get revenge on a player that has wronged you in the past. Paintball is a growing port full of players of high integrity and professionalism. We hold ourselves up to a high standard and sportsmanlike conduct. All players are to respect the rules of the game at all times. Of these rules the most important ones involve in identifying player eliminations and player safety when not in the game. Any aggressive behavior displayed on the field, a head shot at point blank range compromises player safety.
While paintball players are forbidden from tracking intentional shots at the face from close range, these hits to happen. To protect yourself from head or neck injury, consider purchasing goggles and head protection that protects the entire head area. Paintball now has several full-head protection goggle systems. These new systems cover the sides and back of the head. Some quality goggles and head protection systems include the JT Spectra Flex 8 Full head shield, the Extreme Rage Ray U2.1, the JT elite Head shield, and the UForce Eye tactical. The UForce Eye Tactical covers the entire head and also comes equipped with a neck sleeve to absorb the impact of a shot to the neck.
