Things That Go Wrong On the Paintball Field
You may have prepared to the best of your abilities to have everything go right on the paintball field, but in this perfect world, something invariably goes wrong. Despite putting your best foot forward, your goggles may fog up, causing you to run into a tree, or your loader may betray you, making you defenseless in the game. Despite your best efforts, something can always go wrong out there on the paintball field. Below is a list of things that can go wrong, and how to fix them.
- Sometimes, the loader can malfunction and stop working. Today's loaders are built for faster loading, and faster shooting, but they are also more fragile. To keep your loader humming, maintenance and cleaning is essential to keep it from jamming up on you.
- Washing your paintball clothes with your regular clothes can sometimes leave paint stains on all of them. While paintballs are advertised as water soluble and non-stain causing, they can sometimes remain on clothes even through a washing.
While it can be a pain, it is important to clean all of your clothes
before stepping back out onto the field. The pads are especially
prone to retaining moisture if not washed and dried, making you
an unpopular teammate. In addition, cleaning all your gear will be
beneficial in the long run. When you get home at the end of the
day, clean your marker, and the pods in the sink to get all the dirt.
Any dirt left in the pods will eventually make their way into the
marker, damaging the instrument.
- You may learn in the middle of the game that your marker is not firing properly. There could be a number of reasons for this, including the paintballs you are using, the overall maintenance of your marker, and the cleanliness of your other paintball gear. The first thing you must bring onto the field is a clear and well maintained marker and barrel. At the end of your previous day of playing, you should have checked to make sure that your paintball barrel and marker were clear of paint. Any residual paint from the previous outing could make your marker shoot like crap.

The paintballs you use may affect the ability of your marker to
shoot properly. After purchasing your ammo, it is essential to
store it in a cool, dry place. Do not leave your ammo outside or in
your car, any place it would be exposed to heat or moisture.
To get the most out of your paint, it is essential for the paintballs
to be stored in a cool dry place, and for them to be periodically
rotated. If the paintball are not rotated, then the paint fill can
sometimes collect in one side and cause dimples to form. When
rotating your bag of paintballs, you shuffle the balls around.
When the paintballs are mixed around and kept in a nice, dry
place they can last for many months.
- There are things can go wrong that can hinder the accuracy of your marker. Usually, the most common cause of a marker malfunction is improper maintenance. When you purchase your marker, read the owner's manual and periodically review it. Follow all the directions in the user's manual, and check with a knowledgeable player at your local field for advice. Keep up with the periodic maintenance so that your marker does not betray you in the middle of a game.
- One issue for players is having their vision compromised due to mask problems. The lens wears out over time, and it must be replaced periodically. If blasted in the goggle during a game, you must clean the mark and lens as soon as possible to extend the life of the head protection system. After every day of paintball playing, clean and soak your mask in warm water.
