Paintball Statistics
All the paintball statistics in the last couple of years show a sport that is growing by leaps and bounds. They also show a sport that has a remarkably low incidence of injury. Paintball is a sport that reaches all entertainment mediums, including television, print publications, PUP sales, and websites devoted to the game. The DMOZ.org open directory lists over 800 websites related to the paintball. Some of these websites are devoted to paintball teams. Some paintball teams include Team Assassin, Stolen Tranquility, Team Twizted, and Waterworks. In fact, there are paintball teams with registered websites in all 50 states, and hundreds more across the world. The newest paintball statistics indicate paintball to be a sport that has reached almost every country. It is a sport that enjoys a universal following from the youth and adult populations in nearly every country. There are paintball fields and paintball teams in nearly every corner of the world, including Germany, France, the United Kingdom, and Denmark. Some paintball fields outside the United States include Ireland's Actionpark Paintball, Snake-Paintball in Austria, and Chaos Paintball in New Zealand.
American Sports Data Inc. has recently shown that paintball is the fourth largest alternative sport in the United States. Other alternative sports include BMX freestyle, B.A.S.E. jumping, motocross, knee boarding, and sky surfing. The sport already enjoys a significant world following and continues to grow. From 1998 to 2004, participation in the game increased from 5.9 million to 9.6 million players. In the United States, the sport is one of the most commonly played athletic disciplines and even compares well to soccer, football, baseball, and hockey. Paintball is often listed in the category of extreme sports, even though it does not pose the same risks that other extreme sports do. Other extreme sports include Bouldering, Slamball, Mountaineering, Wakeboarding, and Water skiing. Of the extreme sports, only skateboarding and inline skating had more regularly participating enthusiasts.

By the year 2006, organizations like the SGMA estimated that over 12 million people participate in paintball each year. Those enthusiasts compete in paintball leagues such as the Xtreme Paintball Sports League and on fields such as Pure Paintball in Willow River, Minnesota. Paintball is still more popular than sports like mountain biking, snowboarding, and rock climbing.
In 2004-2006, nearly as many people played paintball as played baseball. One of the reasons for this is the enthusiasm that players have for the game. Recently, Google returned 23,400,000 results when users searched for the term "paintball". By comparison, 11,900,000 results were received by doing a Google search using the word "motocross". Some Google paintball results were for manufacturers such as BT Paintball Designs.
