Player Purgatory
Player Purgatory is a slang term for the dead box, or the section on the paintball field that players go to when they are eliminated. When a player is eliminated, there is a special section of the filed that players are supposed to go to. Players in player purgatory are expected to wait there until the end of the game. Players in the dead box are usually expected to face away from the playing field, and they are not supposed to influence the outcome of the game in any way. In, most games, players are eliminated when they are struck by a paintball that has exploded on them. The paints splatter on a player must come from a direct hit with the player, not from a ricochet with the ground, or a hyperball bunker. Most paintball games are single elimination, meaning that when a player is tagged he must remain in player purgatory for the rest of the game.
There are some games where players may get a chance to be sprung out of player purgatory or may never have to go there at all in a game. In the game Trophy Hunter, players who are tagged are expected to stand or kneel in place, and surrender an armband to the person who made the hit. Trophy hunter is a game of multiple eliminations, where a signal sounds at 5 minute intervals in a 30minute game. If you have been tagged, you kneel in place until you hear the next signal. Once you hear the next signal, you are back in the game. There is no player purgatory in the trophy hunter game. Other paintball game variations include the Alamo, fugitive, and mercenary. In the mercenary game, two one player teams begin the fame from two opposite end of the field. The mercenaries all wear some type of bright, distinctive clothing that is clearly recognizable. During the paintball game, players try to shoot at members of the other team or try to recruit mercenaries onto their own team. Once a mercenary has been recruited, he removes his bright clothing and puts on an armband or jersey of the team that he has been recruited to. Standard rules of player eliminations apply in these games, where a tagged player is sent to player purgatory for the rest off the game.
