Hold That Flag! - Paintball Definitions
The term "Hold That Flag!" is used as a challenge from the captain of one team to the other to go to a single flag station and guard it for a number of minutes. This may be a phrase that is used in several different paintball game variations, and it is most often used for the game Hold That Flag!. In this game, there are three teams that are selected from a group of players, with each team defending a flag station, and the other two teams trying to end the game by touching the flag at the flag station. The entire event takes place over 4 to 8 games usually, and the winning team is the team that has accumulated the most points through the final game. In each game, the defending team gets 2 points if they are successfully able to Hold That Flag! If a player from one of the two attacking teams manages to reach the flag, then both attacking teams get 1 point. The challenge to hold the flag comes into play during the bidding process, where the team to make the highest bid gets the chance to defend the flag for the number of minutes of their bid. The captain of each team represents them in the bidding process. A typical bidding process, moderated by a Gamemaster, goes something like this:
Gamemaster: "Team 1, what's your bid?"
Captain 1: "Team 1 can hold that flag for 14 minutes!"
Gamemaster: "Team 2?"
Captain 2: "Team 2 can hold the flag for 16 minutes!"
Gamemaster: "How about Team 3?"
Captain 3: "Team 3 can hold it for 19."
Captain 1: "Then Hold That Flag!"
Gamemaster: "Team 2?"
Captain 2: "Right, let's see if you can Hold That Flag!"
The game begins with the Grandmaster calling "Go!" and ends with either the flag being touched, or the bid time expiring, giving the bidding team the victory.
There are several variations to this game that include rotating flag holders instead of bidding, or involve the players not just having to grab the flag but to also take it back to a team's starting point. In one variation of this game, the flag must be captured and run out of the defending team's defensive perimeter or go back to a specified safe haven area. If a player captures the flag but is tagged on his way to safe passage, he must drop it where he was hit and slide out of the game. The flag can be picked up by another attacker and brought out of the defensive zone, or re-acquired by the flag holders and brought back to the flag station. Defensive players can likewise pick it up and replace it where the Gamemaster originally placed it.

In a second variation, six rounds are played including three teams in which each team gets a chance to be the flag holders twice. The winner is able to defend the flag for the longest total time on defense.
In a third variation, the basic game of Hold That Flag is played with a time that is set by the Gamemaster, not from the bidding process. Unlike the classic format, defensive players do not have to stay within a small perimeter around the flag station.
