S - Paintball Terms & Definitions
- Safety - The number 1 priority on a paintball field. No one should be getting hurt or hit in the face.
- Safety (2) - A switch or a lever which prevents the trigger from engaging the firing mechanism. A safety is not a substitute for a barrel blocking device.
- Sheridan Based - A sight rail that is raised up off the body of the gun. The purpose for this is to allow the shooter a better field of view.
- Semi-auto Marker - A Semi-Auto Marker is also known as a semi-automatic marker. Most markers are one of two styles: pump guns or semi-automatic. A semi-automatic gun has internal parts allowing a paintball to be automatically chambered after each fire. Each paintball requires a trigger pull to load the next one. Pump guns are not automatically chambered after each fire. In a stock gun or pump gun, each paintball loaded to fire must be done so by means of pulling back on a slide pump to open the chamber. Some excellent semi-automatic markers include the Tippmann 98 custom, Viewloader Prodigy E-Grip semi-auto, and Psychoballistics Silver Bullet.
- Sandbagging - Players or tournament teams dropping back in classification to increase their chances of winning. A mediocre semi-pr team, for example, may "sandbag" by dropping down into the Amateur division to play against less-experienced players. This practice is strictly discouraged in most high-level tournament competition. Organizations like the APPA require players to register for every tournament they participate in, so that a player and team's results can be tracked. If a player and team's results are tracked properly, then they won't be able to jump up or down in ranking at inappropriate times.
- Scenario Game - An organized game with a theme, such as the D-Day Normandy invasion in World War II, an alien invasion or some other factual or fictional situation. These games often run 24 hours and have special rules, story lines and characters. Each type of scenario game has particular paintball weapons, guns, or bunkers that usually go along with them. In alien invasion games, for example, certain players may have invincible powers and be impervious to elimination. In scenario games with themes, special weapons for these games could be paintball tanks, paintball mines, and paint grenades.
- Scenario - An imaginary story behind a paintball game played in a wooded field. The scenario can be anything the two teams decide are the parameters for the game. The scenario dictates the parameters and other rules during play to keep the game interesting and fair for both sides. The scenario is used to bring a sense of realism to the game to enhance enjoyment.
- Slide Check - A device connected to a remote line, this is used to shut off the air supply and bleed downstream air safely when a player wants to disconnect the marker from the air system.
- Snake - long and winding bunker. Other bunkers include the Dorito, Star, Cannon, and Tree. Suppressive Fire (see lane) - Suppressive fire is heavy shooting at a particular lane between bunkers to keep opposing players from running between them.
- Special Forces - A character role in scenario paintball where they are allowed special rules and abilities to enhance the realism of the game.
