R - Paintball Terms & Definitions
- Ram - A Double-acting cylinder that helps re-cock semi-automatic marker.
- Rate of Fire - Rate of fire is the number of balls shot out of the barrel in some measured time frame, but his is actually determined by the setting of the recharge between shots. Rate of fire is often abbreviated as ROF. Usually, the Rate of Fire when describing a paintball refers to the number of projectiles that it can fire in one second. Some markers that have a very fast Rate of fire include the Psycho Ballistics Lightning Deluxe, Worr Games Products Trilogy Competition Autococker, and Evil Factory Team Shocker.
- Rec Ball - Short for recreational paintball. Anything non-tournament related is usually referred to as rec ball.
- Rec ball - Is a slang term for playing paintball for recreational purposes only. See also "Woodsball" Rec ball can be played indoors or outdoors, though this slang term usually refers to outdoor paintball. Rec ball usually refers to games that are played in wooded areas on larger fields than speedball courts. Some fields that support Rec ball games include Bayou Dragon Paintball in Marreso Louisiana and Area 52 Paintball in Mackinaw Illinois.
- Red Dot Scope - A type of aiming device used on some paintball markers and real rifles. Red dot scopes create a red dot of light visible to the shooter to help until the aim of the gun. Red dots are not actually projected onto the target like a laser pointer, but rather viewable only in the scope.
- Referee - Also called the ref, the Referee is on the field to ensure the rules of paintball as well as the parameters of a chosen scenario are enforced. The referee is the final decision maker when it comes to disputes and questions by players. Referees usually wear bright-colored clothing to denote their presence and carry equipment such as a radio, whistle, hand-held chronograph, etc.
- Receiver - Main body of a marker that houses the bolt and the hammer. The feed nipple is typically part of the receiver. With sidearms, it is called the frame.
- Recoil - The reward movement of a marker resulting from firing a paintball.
- Regulator - This item is an add-on for use with nitro/compressed air. The regulator regulates the pressure of the incoming gas, then drops it down to what pressure it's set at. (ex. An incoming pressure of a tank of 3000 or 4500 psi) a regulator would allow an output pressure of only 850 psi to match the pressure specifications from the marker manufacturer.)
- Ringer - A more experienced player hidden in a field of less experienced players.
- Round - Either a) spherical like a three dimension circle or b) one paintball capable of being fired through your paintball gun.
- Reinsertion - The ability to return to a game if a player has been previously eliminated by a paint splatter. Usually a player must return their flag and touch it in order to be considered reinserted.
- Reticle - A network of fine lines, wires, or the like placed in the focus of the eye piece of an optical instrument. The crosshairs of a scope.
