Flank - Paintball Terminology
Flank refers to the left or the right of a player or a group of players. As a military or paintball term, a player must always know who has their flank, or who has their back on their left or right side. Players must always be aware of everything that is going on around him, not just what or who is directly in front of him. Sometimes, younger or less experienced palyers can fall into the tunnel vision trap where they just see things that are directly in front of them. If a player focuses too much on one particular target, they are more likely to become a target. When players have a good field vision, they can see what is going on in front of them, as well as what bunkers or opposing players there are on their left and right flank.
Flank as a paintball definition or player maneuver can mean the act of moving against an opposing player from the side in order to get a good shot on him. To flank means to move to the let or right side of an opponent or opposing players to get a better angle on them. Speedball and tournament paintball are games where the flank tactic are very useful while advancing against the enemy. In speedball games, the fields are designed with inflatable bunkers that are positioned in identical formations on both sides of the field. Rather than shoot head on against another player, successful attackers go from bunker to bunker to get to a position where a player has a good angle on the other player. Some quality bunkers used in these type of speedball games include Sup'air Bunkers from Sup'air Universe, and Mighty Air Bunkers from the Mighty Paintball Corporation. The bunkers from Mighty Paintball can be set up quickly, and their top grade Smart-Bunkers systems with pressure sensitive valves protect the air bunkers from over inflation.

To flank means to move to the left or right side of an opposing player to get a better angle on them. This is one of a number of maneuvers that players learn to use to gain an edge over an opponent in a paintball game. Eliminating other players is not always about coming up over the top of a bunker and shooting right at him. Playing at a high level is more often about covering teammates as he makes charges up the field, shooting at someone from the left and right flank, and shooting while running. Shooting while on the run is important while making moves up the field towards the enemy objective. While shots fired while on the run are not always the most accurate, it is an aggressive maneuver that keeps the enemy on their heels, and makes you a more formidable opponent. If a player makes long runs up the field without firing, you give your opponents a chance to line up and take shots at you unchallenged. Shooting on the run is a good move to take to keep your enemy on the defensive.
Another good tactic to employ in games is zigzagging to bunkers. If you move from bunker to bunker in a straight line, your moves become obvious, and you become a much easier target for elimination. Other popular paintball game moves include crawling and sniping.
