Recreational Hopperball
"I have friends who have rapid firing Angel markers and it is almost no fun to play against them. As long as he has paint, I am on my belly. If we limit the amount of paint a person can carry, they will have to be more careful as to where they put it. You would still have the advantage he paid for his marker, but it doesn't overmatch the game so that you must have a semiautomatic marker. Besides, didn't we learn yet how much an arms race cost? I thought paintballers were smarter than the government."
Quote from Ultimate Guide to Paintball, paintball book by Action Pursuit Games .
The above quote from Ultimate Guide to Paintball is one example of the frustration some players face when they are out gunned and out-ammod in games. Players with markers such as the JT USA Excellerator 5.0 and the Free-Flow are capable of rapid-firing up to 20 paintballs per second, putting the stock gunners at a distinct advantage. When the high-end semi-automatics, and the harnesses carrying hundreds of extra paintballs, the newer or poorer players are often overwhelmed by the constant streams of paint flying through the air.

Limited-paint games are great way for players who do not have enough money for autococker or tons of paint to play against others on a more level playing field. If all the players on a field only have a maximum of 100 paintballs available to them, their players will be much more selective with their shots, and players will be forced to be much more thoughtful with the shots they take. Hopperball is one popular game that only allows players with 200 paintballs each that they must consider through the end of the game. The number 200 is popular because this is how many paintballs can be loaded at once into an average size hopper. Hoppers are usually located directly over the chamber of a marker, and they drop paintballs into the marker one by one. Some excellent hoppers include the Draxxus Pulse, Viewloader www.viewloader.com Vlocity, and Viewloader Evolution 3.
Most games of hopperball have 200 count limits, but some games can have 100 count limits or even 40 paintballs. Recreational hopperball games are unique because they can also be played as another rule to classic games like Paintburner, XBall, President, and Predator. Recreational hopperball can include the paintball game variations with the added rule that players are only allowed 200 or 100 paintballs to work with in a game. This count limit format has sometimes been put in at fields like Rock-it Games in Metairie Louisiana and Airsports Paintball in Ludlowe Massachusetts.
There are other paintball games besides Recreational Hopperball where a players firepower is limited. In the game Gettysburg, a player has to manually feed paintballs into the chamber one at a time. The players are not allowed to use any kind of bulk loading system.
