Three Categories of Paintball Matches
Paintball matches and players compete in 3 different types of skirmishes, recreational, scenario, and tournament. Most paintball players play recreational paintball, and they play recreational paintball at their local field. There are over 1000 local paintball fields throughout the United States, and most players have one in their area that is within driving distance.
Rec Ball. Rec-Ball is like paintball's default game. A rec-ball game is probably your most informal paintball game. Most of the time, people playing rec-ball, or recreational paintball, will play in informal conditions, in a fun atmosphere. Recreational paintball games, played on local fields, are organized, with a set of rules established by the field owners, and a group of trained referees to enforce the rules. But most recreational paintball games are played for the love of the game, not for cash prizes or money endorsements like in professional tournaments. While tournaments games like the XBall Leagues have large audiences, rec-ball games are played between friends and paintball enthusiasts, without the fanfare of televised tournament action.
Most paintball players start out as newbies playing recreational paintball. Some players play rec ball all their lives and never play a match of tournament ball, while others go for the glory at tournament play as soon as they are good enough. There are over 1,000 fields for recreational paintball throughout the United States, including Combat Zone in Merritt Island, Florida. Combat Zone has a large field store for buying your recreational paintball guns n' gear, as well as a well maintained indoor paintball facility. The Combat Zone has an indoor facility that will keep players into the game all year, as well as prize tournaments for indoor paintball. Other Florida recreational fields include Hotshots Paintball in Loxahatchee. Hot Shots paintball has a number of unique fields with bunkers that include piles of tires, custom built forts, a bus, and overturned trees.

Tournament Paintball. Tournament Paintball games are a step up from rec-ball matches as they involved prizes that include cash or paintball gear, a live audience, and some matches are even televised. Tournament paintball games are usually held in much smaller venues than recreational paintball or scenario paintball. Most tournament paintball fields have the speedball design, with turf services and strategically placed inflatable bunkers. While recreational and scenario paintball games are played on natural rugged venues, tournament and games almost always played on flat surfaces. Tournament paintball fields are small, and the games are short, so you will expect to see a lot of action.
Scenario Paintball. Scenario Paintball Games are usually much longer than other paintball games. Scenario paintball has a popular following, and you can find a lot of information about these events on Special OPS Paintball.
