Scoring | Hold That Flag!
The paintball game variation Hold That Flag! has its own set of terminology, scoring, and strategies. The game Hold That Flag! starts with three teams that bid against one another to see who get to defend a single flag, and the team with the winning bid must then compete against the two other teams. Scoring and points are given out to teams that are able to hold the flag for the time described in their winning bid. Before we get any further into the scoring rules, we will discuss how the teams and team captains are picked, as well as bidding process.
The game of Hold That Flag! has its foundations in the Classic Capture the Flag but it also borrows concepts from bridge, poker, and the old television game show "Name That Tune." During the pregame phase of the event, three teams of equal strength are chosen. A single flag is set up in a central location on the field. Teams then bid on a chance to defend the flag. The defending team must then hold the flag as many minutes as they bid.

All players converge around a Gamemaster who moderates the bidding process and signals the start and end of games. The Gamemaster chooses three team captains from among the group of players. The captains then take turns picking players in a draft. Once the three teams have been chosen, the team players stand with their captain. The three team captains represent their teams in the bidding process. The Gamemaster auctions off the flag. Here is what a typical bidding process sounds like.
- Gamemaster: "Team 1, what's your bid?"
- Captain 1: "Team 1 can hold that flag for four minutes."
- Gamemaster: "Do you think you have more minutes in you, Team 2?"
- Captain 2: "Team 2 can hold it for six minutes!"
- Gamemaster: "How about Team?"
- Captain 3: "Team 3 is the real deal. Team three thinks that it can hold the flag for 10 minutes."
- Captain 2: "Then hold that flag!"
- Captain 1: "Yes. I'd like to see you try to hold that flag. We are ready for you!"
So now team 3 has won the bidding and has the opportunity to defend the flag station, but they have their work cut out for them. Team 3 must now defend the centrally located flag station against no one, but two teams. The Gamemaster then announces, "Five minutes to go! Teams 1 and 2 must then back up to 100 yards away, and wait for the Game On! Signal from the Gamemaster.
When the Gamemaster signals game start, Team 3 must keep any player from the other teams from touching the flag for ten minutes (the time of their winning bid). The scoring criteria goes like this. If the defending team hold that flag for the time bid, receive 2 points. If any player from either of the other two teams get to the flag before time expires, each attacking team receives one point. Hold that Flag! games are usually played as a match with several rounds. The team with the most points at the end of the last round wins the match.
