Massachusetts is a very historical state, and a commonwealth that has a rich history that goes back many hundreds of years. The first permanent settlers of the state were the Puritans and Pilgrims who made the dangerous journey across the sea in search of religious freedom. The settlers of the state founded Boston, Salem, and Plymouth. Only a century and a half later, Massachusetts became a colony with a prosperous economy and later became known as the "Cradle of Liberty" for its role in inspiring men across the colonies to take up the cause of independence from England.
Massachusetts has an incredible history that features the highlights and lowlights of man's great potential and worldly weaknesses. Some regrettable incidents that occurred in this state included the Salem Witch trials and the trading of Babe Ruth from the Red Sox to the New York Yankees for cash. Massachusetts has experienced many highs as an industrial, fishing, and manufacturing commonwealth. During its history, the cities of Boston and Gloucester were at times two of the most productive fishing cities in the world. Peabody Massachusetts at pone time was once the leather capital of the world.
