Hawaii is the only state in the United States completely surrounded by water. Hawaii is located in the Pacific Ocean, and was the last American territory to be ratified as a U.S. State. The entire region of Hawaii was created by volcanic activity, and some of these volcanoes are still active today. Hawaii is located nearly 2,500 miles from the coast of California, and is best known for its warm humid climate and breathtakingly beautiful beaches. In the 19th century, Hawaii was also known as the Sandwich Islands. Hawaii is made up of several islands that are located relatively close together in a downwards arc formation. The islands of Hawaii include Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Maui, Molokai, Kahoolawe, and Hawaii. The island of Hawaii is the largest island in the state and is located on the southern and eastern end of the cluster.
The Island of Hawaii is larger than all of the other Hawaiian Islands combined. At its highest elevations, the island of Hawaii is high enough to see all the way across to the island of Maui in the distance. The island of Maui is a lush green island with steep mountains that cut across its lands, offering some breathtaking views. The first people to populate Maui were the Polynesians, who set up permanent settlements in the 1700's.
