Every recreational paintball game and tournament game has paintball speed limit, or how fast paintballs are allowed to come out of their markers. Players and referees test the speed of their projectiles using a chronograph. A chronograph may be mounted onto a paintball gun, or it may be a separate device used to measure the speed of a paintball as it exits the barrel. Most recreational fields use chronographs to make sure all projectiles are traveling at less than 275 feet per second. All licensed fields have speed limits at less than 300 feet per second.
There are a number of external chronographs on the market. The PMI Hand-Held Chronograph is small enough to travel easily with you during games. This Hand-Hold Chronograph is a useful tool for referees to check a player's marker velocity during games. Shooting hot is when a player shoots at speeds outside of field limits, and this may happen even after a referee has chronograph checked the same marker before the game. Sometimes, players may make certain adjustments to their markers during games to intentionally speed up their projectiles. If a player or referee suspects that this has happened, they may call on a referee to check marker speeds within a game. The size of the PMI Hand-Held Chronograph is 2.5" x 3.5" x 1.19". This PMI chronograph can operate for around 30 hours on a single 3-volt lithium battery. This chronograph instantly records speeds between 150 to 450 feet per second. This PMI chronograph is very accurate, and is a very durable little machine.
Another chronograph that provides excellent results is the Custom Chronograph Inc. X-Radar. The X-Radar can measure paintball speeds, as well as the number of shots fired per second. This chronograph can output over 25 hours of accurate readings on a single 9-volt battery. The X-Radar comes with a full 3-digit LCD display, a low battery indicator, and a drawstring carry bag. Other features of the Custom Chronograph Inc. X-Radar include a 90 day manufacturer's warranty (good in the USA only), and a measurement range between 200 and 400 feet per second. IN snap shooter and other low velocity games, players or refs may need to select a different brand of chronograph. The Custom Chronograph is convenient both because of its size, and because of its weight. The X-Radar is very light, weighing less than 7 ounces even with the battery installed. This chronograph is also compact, being 5.38 x 2.75 x 1.25 inches.

If you are in the market for a more commercial speed limit detector, then you might want to check out the Professional Chronograph, available at Real Action Paintball. The Professional Chronograph measures paintball velocity with pinpoint accuracy. The Professional Chronograph is accurate in almost any lighting condition. This chronograph has a great range, clocking up to a 475 feet per second maximum.
RadarChron also makes a top of the line chronograph that produces reliable, accurate results. This RADARchron chronograph used doplar radar technology to measure paintball velocity speeds. The device can measure speeds in feet per second while being hand held, or it can be mounted onto a marker barrel with an easy to use loop strap.
