While the early versions of paintball were open field games played in natural environments, today's tournament paintball games as smaller, referred, and high profile events with national sponsorships. Paintball has indeed come a long way since its early inceptions. The founding founders envisioned paintball as a survival game where players could sharpen their skills of self preservation and the ability to defend themselves if needed be. Today, tournament paintball games feature professional players with corporate sponsorships, and some matches are known to draw large audiences.
As the game of paintball evolved in the 1980s, the sport began to emphasize team survival over individual survival. Games of total elimination evolved into games like capture the flag, which were team efforts where one player would protect the other in an offensive assault. The greens and browns in players clothing became radical colors of blacks and bright blues, reds, and yellows in team uniforms. Tournament games feature standardized fields with high nets, huge inflatable bunker-balloons, and bleachers for friends, family, and fans of the game. The NPPL.
The NPPL is short for the National Professional Paintball League. The NPPL is the sole sanctioning body for all amateur and professional paintball players in North America. The NPPL was first formed in 1993 and is the oldest sponsor of tournament paintball. This league is composed of players and player representatives who establish league rules and guidelines, and sanction and preside over all aspects of an NPPL event. While the NPPL is currently the sole sanctioning body for North America, there are plans for establishing a base all over the world. The future goal of the NPPL is to create a major mainstream audience for the sport, expand the number of players playing paintball, and educate others about the games high safety standards, team building experiences, and integrity of the sport.
