Le Parkour | Extreme Sports
What puts a given athletic activity in the category of extreme sports? What makes extreme sports different from other sports? While there are no definitions that all people agree with, these are some similarities that connect all the various extreme sports. First, these types of sports all involve players using machines or various apparatuses to go to heights and speeds that have never been achieved in other types of sports. In extreme sports that involve climbing, athletes can often scale the highest mountains in the world. In events that involve cars or motorcycles, athletes may perform stunts while traveling faster than 200 miles an hour. In other events, various ramps, jumps, and halfpipes are set up so that athletes can perform various jumps and acrobatics up and over them. Some extreme sports include street luge, sandboarding, inline skating, and Le Parkour. All of the extreme sports mentioned in this article involve athletes (usually young athletes) using machines to go to speeds and heights that people wouldn't have thought possible before the technological innovations of the 20th century.
Le Parkour is also known as PK or l'art du deplacement. Le Parkour is the art of moving from one obstacle to another while using only your own body power and balance. Athletes performing Le Parkour stunts perform difficult leaps or jumps from one object to another using their own strength, speed, and agility. These types of stunts are usually performed in urban locations with objects such as concrete walls, second floor railings, trees, and statues. Le Parkour stunts may be performed in either urban area or rural areas. Other extreme sports that involve a certain amount of risk include Drag Racing, BMX Freestyle, scuba diving, ski-boarding, para-motoring, paragliding, kneeboarding, ice climbing, and Gliding.

All of the extreme sports mentioned previously in this article involve various machines, apparatuses, or tools that enable athletes to go to amazing heights and speeds while performing various races and stunts. In some of these extreme sports, the objective is the same as classic racing sports, where athletes must travel a certain distance in the shortest possible time. Classic racing sports would include the 400 meter, race walking, road racing, track cycling, and rowing. All of these sports have been around in one from or another from the past 200 years. Extreme racing sports include drag racing, wind sports, ice boating, and speed skiing. These types of sports are distance races, but involve speeds never reached until the last 50 years. Other extreme sports include Tricking, Whitewater Rafting, and Roller Derby.
Roller Derby is a contact sport that involves several athletes roller skating around a closed circuit course while trying to fight off other skaters who try to knock them off the track.
