Lay-Down Bunkers
Lay-down bunkers are bunkers where players must lay down on their backs or stomach in order to avoid enemy fire. The two most well-known lay-down bunkers are the snake and the beam. The snake and the lean are two bunkers where players can cover their whole bodies while laying down. If kneeling or standing, they would be open to getting tagged. A paintball bunker is defined as any structure that a player can get behind to avoid getting tagged.
The snake and the beam are the two most common bunkers that you will see in speedball field and games. Competitive speedball tournaments feature the beam, the snake, and other inflatable bunkers. Tournaments often like the inflatable bunker because they come in a variety of shapes and sizes and can be blown up and arranged easily. Because the inflatable bunkers come in standard sizes, the bunkers can be arranged on the tow sides of a speedball field so that both sides have bunkers that are the exact same size and are put in the exact same place. With permanent bunkers, it is very hard to move them around and get creative with field designs.

Lay-Down Bunkers can either be purchased by companies such as Sup' Airball and Ameri-Brand Products, they may be built from scratch, or they may modify parts that have now won a second life as a paintball bunker. One common bunker that is used is a 55 Gallon plastic barrel that is weighted down with water, dirt, or sand. Those bunkers are relatively cheap and very durable. If these barrel bunkers are filled with water or sand, they can be pretty quickly emptied so that they can be moved to change bunker formations. Alone, these 55 gallon bunkers work well as kneeling bunkers, but only if your opponent is standing directly in front of you. If your opponent is very close to you or angled to the right or the left, then you may be exposed, and you will have to fire at him or run to stay alive. To turn these 55 gallon plastic barrels into stand-up bunkers, you will need to stack 2 or three of them on top of one another. You can also fill the 55 gal. plastic barrels, lay them sideways, and correct a number of them to make a snake bunkers. Snake bunkers are popular because they allow players the ability to crawl through enemy territory without being tagged or spotted. The snake bunker can often be seen at or near the center of the field.
Lay-down bunkers, stand-up bunkers, and kneeling bunkers can either be homemade or bought from a paintball manufacturer. Balzistic Bunker manufactures inflatable bunkers as well as a number of different products, including hybrid portable paintball bunker. These hybrid bunkers can be stacked and folded for easy storage. The hybrid bunkers are light enough to move quickly but sturdy enough to absorb paintball impacts without breaking or getting knocked over.
