There are many options for those interested in paintball game competition. Some of these options include indoor paintball fields, woodsball, and speedball fields. Where you decide to play depends on the temperature outside, how many people will be participating, and if the game is a national championship event.
The most common place to play paintball in the beginning was the woods. Often, paintball games that are played in the woods is referred to as woods ball. Woodsball paintball was the natural venue of choice for the creators of the game, George Butler, Charles Gaines, and Hayes Noel. These founding fathers were concerned about the growing nation of yuppies and businessmen who had grown soft, and lost some of the survival instincts of their forefathers. These founding fathers wanted to invent a game where people could reconnect and hone their natural survival instincts in the spirit of friendly competition.
These founding fathers conceived of an original paintball game as a survival game. The best man wins. It was played in the woods and open fields, and players used natural objects such as trees, logs, and rocks to shield themselves from enemy fire. Popular clothing for these games was camouflage. The original ammo for these games was oil based pain, that was not always machine washable, as opposed to the water based paintballs today that will easily come out in the wash.
"The illusion of danger was so real, it was the most exciting thing I had ever done. Every cell in my body was turned on." Hayes Noel, speaking about his first paintball experience, in the survival game.

While the experience of woodsball can be fun and exciting, some more formal fields are needed for tournament style competitions. In tournaments, paintball field proportions with two equally spaced halves and an identical arrangement of bunkers on both sides of the field. While cover for enemy fire in woodsball comes from natural objects such as trees and trenches in woodsball, tournament bunkers are inflatable bunkers. The great thing about standardized fields in tournaments is that teams can get a printout of the field's dimensions from the field's website, and study the alignment of bunkers to come up with a team strategy.
