The Rover - Player Positions
The rover is the player who has the best understanding of what is happening all over the field. The rover is usually the player who covers the most ground on the field, as he will move into position to play offense or defense as needed. The rover is similar to the halfback in soccer, as he may be providing support on offense or defense at any given time. The rover moves quickly to where the action is on the field, or to the location of greatest need. The rover will react to join the side that is about to overpower the opposition to a side where his opponents are vulnerable or coming under fire. The rover must also retreat back toward the flag station if it is in danger and help the safety. Or the rover may become the safety as needed and become the last line of defense in protecting the team flag.

The rover is often the most experienced player on the paintball field. The rover has the ability to "see" the entire field and move into the position of greatest need. He will be ready to potentially play any position, whether it be to back up the point man in a push for the enemy flag, or to drop back and defend the team flag. The rover has a good field sense that comes with a natural ability to react quickly to things and the experience that comes with playing the game and putting in the effort. The rover has an excellent ability to read the field and to go solo through a zone that suddenly opens up. The skill of the rover position is usually acquired through game experience, and is a position suited for a veteran player.
