Point Man - Scout - Player Positions
Good team play in the sport of paintball involves good team game planning, and each player performing his position correctly. The player on the field going into the game with a game plan, and with each player assigned a certain position. An important paintball player is the point man, a scout. The point man is usually the one that travels the furthest into in enemy territory first. The point man is in a position of leadership on the field; he travels its furthest down the field toward the enemy flag. The point man leads the charge down the paintball field with a support team to provide him cover. The point man position is a glamorous one, as he is often the one capturing the enemy flag, and he is always in a high profile position. The point man is also in one of the most dangerous positions, as he is the most exposed player, and often the fist one to be eliminated. The point man position is often given to the most experienced player, because the point man is the closest player to the enemy and is often in the most vulnerable position. If the point man is not experienced enough to react quickly to pressure, he will often be the first one to be eliminated.
The point man takes the lead in advances down the field, putting him in harms way of the enemy often. Because of this, he must have all his senses on high alert, and he must know how to scout quickly. The point man must be prepared to launch a quick counter-attack if fired upon.

The point man advances down the field under the cover of his teammates. One of the supporting players to provide the point man cover is the sniper. The sniper often waits patiently behind a tree, log, or bunker and has the skill to pick off opponents from a long distance. While the Point man is always on the move, the sniper often stays back, motionless, and out of view. While the point man is always putting himself in harm's way, the sniper usually waits back in an ambush spot, waiting for the unsuspecting enemy to come within range. It is important for a sniper to be an experienced player because he must have the skill to fire off a few quick shots and drop back into cover without being seen or heard. The sniper must be able to quickly come out of hiding, shoot quickly, and retreat back without being seen. The sniper must have the ability to hit a target in 2 or 3 shots; he only has so much time before he gives away his position and becomes very vulnerable.
The Rover is one of the most important sources of cover for the point man. The rover is like the halfback in soccer as he must react and be able to provide support for the defense or offense as needed. The rover may provide support in an offensive attack when he backs up the point man in a charge for the enemy flag. Or the rover may have to retreat back to his own flag station should the station become vulnerable.
