Capture the Flag Basics
Capture the Flag was one of the first paintball game formats, and it is still a classic game format in wide use for a number of reasons. First, it is a game we have probably all played as children, so it is a game that will be easy to understand, even as a first time player. Second, the Capture the Flag game has many of the components of classic battles. It involves courageously making your way across a field of battle deep into hostile enemy territory to take a heavily guarded trophy from them. This game has all the elements of romantic military combat. Bravery. Courage. Boldness. Team Camaraderie. Tactical Skill. To win the game, teams will not succeed by going for individual glory but by moving as units, backing each other up until the game objectives are accomplished. The format of Capture the Flag games goes like this. Two teams of equal strength begin the game from their own flag stations at opposite ends of the field. Each team then begins to engage the enemy, while simultaneously guarding their own flag station and trying to capture the other team's flag at their flag station. If one team manages to capture the other team's flag, then they try to make it back to their own flag station without getting marked. IF they manage to do that, then they win the game. A team can also facilitate their victory by marking and eliminate opposing players who are in their way.
There are many variations to the game of Capture the Flag. The first paintball game had 12 players (each on his own) trying to capture all 12 flags placed on a huge field. Many variations have been suggested over the past decade, different games that create new challenges for all players. There is many paintball game variations that continue to stir the imaginations of players all over the world. With games like Under World, where multiple teams can eliminate each other or turn them to their side, players never have a chance to get bored or run out of ideas thinking of new ways to play the game. Dave Yost, who is published in the paintball book Ultimate Guide to Paintball, created a Capture the Flag variation called Hold that Flag! The game Hold that Flag! has a foundation in Capture the Flag, but the game also borrows elements from bridge, poker, and the old television game show "Name that Tune". This is a very special game that allows teams to play with or against each other, depending on how the bidding goes.
When the Hold that Flag! game begins, three equally sized teams start the game near a centrally located flag. The three teams then bid for the right to defend the flag. The defending team must then hold the flag for as many minutes as they bid. The attack begins. The objective of the game for the defenders is to hold the flag, and for the other teams to take the flag.
The props for this game include 1 flag, a stopwatch or timer, score pad and pencil, whistle or start and end game signal, and a pair of dice. The pair of dice will not be needed for all variations of this game. Once the holding team is in place, the other two teams work together to take the flag.
